Common questions

How should salon tools be disinfected between clients?

Remove hair and product, wash the tool with detergent and water, rinse and dry it, then soak or spray it with a salon disinfectant for the full contact time on the label. Store it in a closed container until it’s used. Tools that can’t be disinfected are single-use.

How often should salon disinfectant be changed?

At least once a day, and sooner if it becomes cloudy or has hair or product in it. Check the label and your local rules, which may set a stricter schedule.

Which salon items must be single-use?

Anything that can’t be cleaned and disinfected, such as nail files, buffers, wax spatulas, cotton, toe separators and neck strips. Throw them away after one client, or give them to the client to keep.

Who inspects salon hygiene?

It depends on your country and the services you offer. For example, US state cosmetology boards, local councils in Australia and local authorities in the UK may inspect or license salons, especially for skin-piercing services.
