Common questions

What is a 30-60-90 day plan?

A plan for a new hire’s first three months, split into three stages, usually learning the role, contributing, then owning the work. Each stage has goals and a way to measure them, and the new hire and manager review it at each 30-day check-in.

Who writes the 30-60-90 day plan, the manager or the new hire?

Usually the manager drafts it and agrees it with the new hire in the first week. Some candidates write one during interviews to show how they’d approach the role, and it then becomes the starting point.

What should be in the first 30 days of a new job?

Mostly learning, such as the systems, procedures, people and customers, and finishing the required training. Add one or two small tasks they can complete on their own, so they contribute early.

How does a 30-60-90 day plan fit with onboarding?

The onboarding checklist covers the tasks, such as paperwork, access, induction and training. The 30-60-90 day plan covers the goals. In Wikidoc, a training program for the role delivers the learning in the first stage, with due dates and quizzes.
