Common questions

What should a support worker induction include?

Screening checks and qualifications before the first shift, then client rights, privacy, incident and abuse reporting, infection control, manual handling and lone working on day one. Care plans, buddy shifts and progress notes follow in the first week, then a competency check.

Which checks do support workers need before they start?

It depends on your country and services. For example, Australian disability workers need an NDIS worker screening check, US home care workers usually need a criminal background check, and English care workers need an enhanced DBS check.

How many buddy shifts should a new support worker do?

Enough to meet each client they’ll support and see their routine at least once with an experienced worker. Many providers set a minimum number of buddy shifts, and add more for clients with complex needs.

How do I show a regulator how my support workers were trained?

Keep a dated record of each worker’s induction, checks and training. In Wikidoc, a training program for the support worker role enrolls each new worker, tests them with quizzes, and records who finished which module and when.
