Common questions

What must a veterinary controlled drug register record?

For each drug and strength, every receipt and every dose given, wasted or destroyed, with the date, the patient or supplier, the quantity, who gave it, and the running balance. Your local rules may add more.

How often should controlled drug stock be checked?

It depends on your rules and policy. Many clinics check daily or weekly, and some rules set a minimum. For example, the RCVS recommends regular checks in the UK, and the DEA requires a biennial inventory in the US alongside your own checks.

Which drugs are controlled in a vet clinic?

Commonly opioids such as methadone, buprenorphine and fentanyl, ketamine, and some sedatives and euthanasia drugs. Each country has its own schedules, so check your local list.

Can the controlled drug register be kept electronically?

In many countries, yes, if the system meets the rules on who can make entries, corrections and keeping records. Check your local rules before switching from paper.
