Common questions

Is a daily safety check required in childcare?

Most regulations require services to keep children safe from hazards, and a daily safety check is the usual way to show it. For example, Australia’s National Quality Framework, England’s EYFS and US state licensing rules all expect premises and equipment to be checked. Check how often your rules require it.

Who should do the daily safety check?

An educator who opens the room or the yard, before children use it. The person in charge reviews the sheet each day and makes sure anything reported is fixed.

What if the check finds a hazard?

Fix it or block the area off before children use it, write it in the notes, and tell the person in charge. If it can’t be fixed that day, keep the area closed and record the repair when it’s done.

Should the outdoor check be done more than once a day?

Do it before children first go outside, and walk the area again after storms, after other groups have used it, or if the yard has been open to the public.
