Common questions

How often should bank accounts be reconciled?

At least monthly, and weekly for busy accounts. The longer you wait, the harder it is to trace a difference, and the later you find an error or a fraudulent payment.

What causes a bank reconciliation not to balance?

Most often a duplicated or deleted transaction, a transaction dated in the wrong period, or a changed opening balance. Compare the opening balance with last period’s reconciled balance first.

Who should review a bank reconciliation?

Someone other than the person who prepared it. They check the balances agree, look at old unreconciled items and question any adjustment.
